Digger Bees? - Melissodes desponsus

Digger Bees? - Melissodes desponsus
Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
August 20, 2006
Gotcha! These bees spend most of their time bottoms up, heads down deep in the thistles - unless he meets she. The male has her clasped so that her wings are trapped under his "arms". She aint goin' nowhere by air! Then anytime she starts to wiggle, he takes his antennae and bats hers with them. Quiets her down quick.
