Caddisfly mimic? - Psyche casta
Hannah Elementary School, Eastern Massachusetts County
June 12, 2013
Size: approximately 1.5 cm
This larva was found on a Sweet Pepperbush leaf, in a grove of (I believe) Black Oak trees and some White Pines, about 10' from a small pond. It appears to have festooned itself with pine needles. I could find only one mention of a terrestrial caddisfly in England, a Google Image search using descriptive adjectives so far hasn't yielded any results. If not a terrestrial caddisfly, it certainly is an interesting example of convergent evolution!
