black ground beetle - Notiobia purpurascens

black ground beetle - Notiobia purpurascens
Organ Mountains foothills, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, USA
August 6, 2006
Size: about 8 mm
Came to UV lights on greasewood/mesquite/cactus incline below jagged spires of the Organ Mountains.

Both the dorsal and ventral views are a montage of two photos each to maximize the in-focus areas. I clone-stamped a lot of specks off this image but left the cruddy-looking stuff hanging out the back end. Is this a fresh load of frass or some kind of egg mass?

Note the fairly abrupt joining of two stria near the anterior end of the elytral suture.
