A couple of clues here. One is the smaller size of the black "pupil" in the eye spot. Another is that the yellow spot isn't divided into two spots above the eye spot, just notched at the side. Both seem to be fairly constant differences.

I'm guessing it never emerged? Since we haven't got a shot of the adult here. Sometimes they wait a year or three to emerge though.

Correct

It has not emerged. I do still have it out on my deck though. I just couldn't throw it away ... just in case ... but I wasn't hopeful, but now that you've said about the year or three ... maybe next year will be the year it decides to come out.

Western Swallowtail as opposed to all the other swallowtails?

Here's hoping that I've put these photos in the right place.

... and a question for all you more knowledgable out there - - - the first 3 photos are from Thurs Sept 21, next 3 from Fri Sept 22, and today Sat Sept 23 I've been keeping an eagle eye on our little friend for any movement as a precursor to him/her shedding skin for the final pupa/chyrsalid stage - - - any helpful insights as to how long we should expect to be kept waiting for that caterpillar skin shedding to the chyrsalid stage?

Good question

if you see the discussion on the green one (below), Pale Tiger is also a possibility in your area. I hope you get an adult to confirm the ID. You may find yourself overwintering this one, which is the hardest part of raising butterflies.

Spring has turned to summer ...

Well, spring has turned to summer and nothing happened. Have seen swallowtails flying around in my yard so I guess that glass base over winter was just too cold for it. :(
