broadnecked ground beetle - Notiobia brevicollis - female

broadnecked ground beetle - Notiobia brevicollis - Female
Organ Mountains foothills, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, USA
August 9, 2006
Size: about 13 mm
Came to UV lights on greasewood/mesquite/cactus incline below jagged spires of the Organ Mountains.

I saw nothing quite similar in the guide pages. There are beetles of similar shape but with more and much deeper elytral stria.

Subjects in this size range present me with a dilema: use my standard closeup lens and have to crop away gobs of megapixels or use my adapted photocopier lens on 7x zoom and settle for a tunnel effect from the lens adaptor. With larger beetles I *have* to use the standard lens and with smaller beetles I can zoom from 8x to 22x and avoid the tunnel effect.

now this one is unmistakeable
