It was a perfectly reasonable guess, and nothing to be ashamed of.
You can't delete comments. All you can do is replace the text (with a hyphen or asterisk or "comment deleted"). However, the comment itself will remain with your name on it. (Incidentally, if someone
replies
to the comment, you won't be able to edit it at all; it will remain as is for all time.)
