I collected this horntail on Rio en Medio Trl. (No. 163) at 9,500 ft elevation in the Aspen Basin 7.5’ quadrangle, Santa Fe Nat’l Forest, Santa Fe Co., New Mexico.

Identification is based on the image, description, and range presented in Schiff et. al. 2012(1). The wide genae and black femora are diagnostic. Schiff does not record it as being found in NM, but we see from his map that north central New Mexico is centrally located within its recorded range in CO and AZ.

This image is from a CombineZP processed stack of 138 images with a 340 µm step taken with a Nikon 200 mm F4 ED IF macro lens set to F5.6 + Nikon D300 camera.

Head
The head image worries me, differing in extent of pale spot and pitting relative to the description and figure B5.26. But none of the other described species is as good a fit.
