Larva - Prolimacodes trigona

Larva - Prolimacodes trigona
Ruby, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
September 17, 2006
Size: 10mm
Feeding on ash leaves in a canyon about 4000ft AMSL, mid-day. It appears to be a caterpillar, head is at R end. The "shell" is soft and flexible. It can crawl slowly but at rest keeps the edges of the shell pressed to the leaf. Any ideas?

Skiff moth caterpillar, I think
or at least a close relative (I don't know what you have in Arizona). Compare images here.

Update: I just found an image of P. trigona here- it looks like a perfect match for yours. The site where I found it is Moths of Southeastern Arizona. A new species for BugGuide - I've made a page for it.

Thanks Hannah!
That was fast! Very interesting, I'd never heard of this group but now I find that I've already met the moth elsewhere. I've just posted a picture (img_1421).

I've unlinked them
since linking is for the same individual, not just the same species. But that's a nice addition. You can use a thumbnail image to preserve a connection (details are in the markup section of Help):

thanks
OK - sorry I didn't understand how to post an unlinked image here!
