An 'Aberrant' Walking Stick - Timema californicum - male

An 'Aberrant' Walking Stick - Timema californicum - Male
Below the summit of Loma Prieta, near the boundary of Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties, Santa Clara County, California, USA
June 23, 2013
This is a collage of the best (though unfortunately rather poor!) images I got of the terminalia.

I think these compare favorably with the diagram for T. californicum in Fig. 6 of the plate here.

Note that, for this specimen, the closest collection locality on the interactive map here is a record next to Loma Prieta labelled:

"Species: T. poppensis; Population: Loma Prieta Way; Hostplant: D" (the "D" standing for douglas fir)

However, scrutinizing the terminalia diagram for T. poppensis on the last page of Vickery & Sandoval (2001), I noticed it shows a conspicuous "central narrowing" of the intradextral process...which is not indicated for T. californicum and is not visible on this individual. This supports an ID of T. californicum here.

For more info, see remarks under 1st image of this series.
