Black Spider - Allocosa

Black Spider - Allocosa
Schwenksville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA
June 15, 2013
Size: 11 mm
I had a good day for spider hunting on this day. I disturbed the sod while in the back yard digging a grave for my cat who had been hit by a car :( Almost as if as a consolation gesture from Nature I saw quite a few types of spiders and insects that where new to my camera experience.

Great spider, but I'm so sorry to hear about your cat.

I get that feeling about nature rewarding me a lot. It seems like every time I go out of my way to do something nice for someone I get rewarded with some great find.

Thank you Lynette! Have you been on Flicker recently? I've been slacking off but when my haard drive failed with all of my photos on it it was blessing that I had uploaded so many of my faves there. You can see the portrait i shot of my Stanley there.
Any recommendations on how I might learn to ID these critters?

oh my gosh
I'm glad you had those as back ups. I should back up my files. I do an external hard drive back up AND a DVD. That way I'm double covered.

I haven't been on Flickr much lately. I'm still upset about the changes they made.

The first place to look for help IDing is the reference list on the genus info page. If you can't find anything there let me know I might be able to find more using the World Spider Catalog.

Sorry to hear about your cat. :( This spider is a nice find, looks like a wolf spider in Allocosa to me.

Let's see what others think.

Thank you! I rely heavily on this forum. Shooting bugs is one of my passions but taxonomy eludes me!
