Chrysobothris ovipositing - Chrysobothris shawnee - female

Chrysobothris ovipositing - Chrysobothris shawnee - Female
Suffern yard, Rockland County, New York, USA
June 29, 2013
After Joshua P. Basham ID'ed these as Chrysobothris...

...I was inspired to make a few fresh new saw cuts in a fallen Red Oak to see if I could attract more Buprestids and other fauna. That strategy and a good deal of patience was rewarded with many fine images including this one of a female ovipositing. She also laid some eggs in a saw cut near the cambium.
The super-tight crop is of the same image.

These images are of a male specimen that I believe to be Chrysobothris shawnee. To be totally sure of the ID you would have to send specimens to one of the buprestid experts to examine.

Wow!
Then what is that appendage and why was he going around touching the bark and saw cut with it?
