holarctic & Oriental; in our area, the holarctic M. acuminata is widespread in the north, M. occidentalis along the Pacific (BC-CA-ID), M. consputa in w. US (CO-OR to AZ-CA), M. notata widespread in the south (NJ-FL-OK-AZ), and M. atropurpurea in AR-TX-AZ(1)(2)
