Hold the presses. Forget all that stuff about alliens
This is a nymph of a species that grows up usually green. You learn something new every day. There is a picture of an adult here,

Moved
I have no idea how I moved this to Schistocerca. Must have been accidentally tagged when I moved some other. Anyway, it is put back under the family until/if it gets identified.

I think "alien" hits it on the head
This thing doesn't look like any native US species that I know of. It looks kind'a like a Lubber nymph, but not one of ours. The pattern is totally different (even allowing for the fact that it could be a mutant of some sort). The shape is different too. Perhaps this is something from way further south that found its way to NC? I don't know what species it is. Even if I've seen the adults, I don't recognize this nymph.

Toy yes, that and an alien. L
Toy yes, that and an alien. Look at the head. Put that thing on an upright body and you have a creature fitting for star treck or x-files.

I think this is an...
Eastern Lubber Grasshopper. Romalea sp. Someone posted that they change from red to black. Therefore, this could be an intermediate stage. Just a supposition.
