Hover Fly - Eupeodes volucris - female

Hover Fly - Eupeodes volucris - Female
Lacey, Thurston County, Washington, USA
July 3, 2013
Eupeodes probably. E. volucris possibly? Info page says abdominal markings should be almost white...these look pretty yellow. Maybe a related species?

The info section for E. volucris says that the larva prey on aphids. Interestingly, the shrub/small tree the hover fly was trying to lay eggs on had a *lot* of aphids on it.

Moved from Syrphid Flies.

Eupeodes volucris looks right to me.
After reading enough descriptions of syrphids, you might conclude that "white" and "yellow" are synonyms. (Personally, I'd call this one "ivory".) Your second image also shows the requisite "red" legs that I'd say are brown.

Good work on the ID. Your images are good, but do try to get a shot straight down from above. Syrphid faces are often helpful, too.
