Antlion
If you retrieved this animal from a pit-like trap, then it is in the genus Myrmeleon. That is the only genus of antlion in North America that constructs the pits. All other genera simply bury themselves in the sand or soil with jaws open, awaiting potential victims.

Then this guy would definitely be in the genus Myrmeleon. There are many pits under the hedges in front of my house. I stuck my finger in the trap and this guy latched on with those amazing jaws.
