possible big eye - Xylophanes tersa

possible big eye - Xylophanes tersa
Longview, Rusk County, Texas, USA
July 8, 2013
Size: 2 1/2 inches
found in our driveway today, looks like a "big eyed horny" but thought they were only in the UK.

Moved
Moved from Sphinx Moths.

This is a tersa sphinx (Xylophanes tersa). You are thinking of the elephant hawk moth (Deilephila elpenor), a related Old World species (though it has been introduced into Canada) with a rather similar larva.
