I think this could be a sawfly larva
in which case, a side view would show more prolegs than the caterpillars of butterflies and moths (see image below). More info in
guide
. Do you have any idea what kind of plant it was eating? That often helps with caterpillar ID.

Silky Dogwood
I believe it was eating silky dogwood leaves. There were plenty of these caterpillars. Origionally they were white but they shed their powdery, white covering.
