A small reddish brown dragonfly that I spotted while mowing the lawn. Not the best picture because the wind was very strong, and the dragonfly was skittish. Any help identifying is appreciated.

I agree with Patrick. The light-colored legs are key here. Neat that you found a female with red on it. During the prime part of their season the males are bright red and the females brown. I had read that older females began to show some red and you have captured that here.

The name authorities at DSA have just renamed this species, formerly Yellow-Legged Meadowhawk, now called Autumn Meadowhawk. Good name, given that you've still got them flying in Northern Virginia in mid-October.

Thanks to you and Patrick for the info! Dragonflies of any sort are rare in my garden, and ones that sit still long enough for a picture are even rarer :)

Yellow-legged Meadowhawk
Sympetrum vicinum, female. Supposedly trumpet-shaped ovipositor is distinctive for this species.
