Andrena (Dactylandrena) - Andrena - female

Andrena (Dactylandrena) - Andrena - Female
Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens, Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
March 29, 2006
Exchanging images to show the black.
This small bee shuttled quickly from one flower to another, mostly in the inner parts of the Chaparral Currant (Ribes malvaceum var. viridifolium; see adjacent photo). Here it is seen on a leaf of a neighboring shrub, Lemonadeberry (Rhus integrifolia), probably concentrating nectar. In January 2006 I observed the same species in White Flowering Currant (Ribes indecorum), completely ignoring the flowering Manzanitas.

Thanks, John,
for all of your information. This gives me a better platform for next spring's observations.

Oh - how would you handle the subgenera on this site, i.e. place under the genus with mention of the subgenus?

Subgenus pages
I created subgenus pages and moved most of the identified images/species under appropriate subgenra.

I don't know
its not my site; but subgenera are very widely used by bee specialists and therefore worth mentioning and perhaps deserving of their own (terminal) guide pages. Very often subgeneric ID is possible when species ID is not.

Thanks -
just wanted your opinion, since drawn from considerable experience.
