dragonfly orange abdomen, amber wings with brown or black markings - Libellula semifasciata
swanzey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, USA
July 17, 2013
We saw this dragonfly perched on a branch sticking out from a tiny (10' x 10') vernal pool surrounded by bog. And, the pool is in the middle of a clear-cut. We are guessing the clearcut and logging trucks disturbed the soil enough to allow the pool. The pool functions as a vernal pool because there are no fish and in April there were wood frog and yellow spotted salamander eggs. This dragonfly has been zipping around the pool for 3 weeks, but never landing on branches beside or in the pool. Then yesterday the dragonfly did perch. The sun was merciless, no shade, mid-90's. We have seen 6 species of dragonflies in this tiny spot that now is home to 5 green frogs. We have seen females of 2 species ovipositing in the pool although it also has grass, cinnamon ferns, and a blueberry shrub. One day last week a painted turtle made an appearance but must have left overnight to greener pastures.
