Brachiacantha ursina - Ursine Spurleg Lady Beetle - Brachiacantha ursina

Brachiacantha ursina - Ursine Spurleg Lady Beetle - Brachiacantha ursina
Millhaven, Lennox and Addington, Ontario, Canada
July 12, 2013
Size: 3-4 mm

yes, B. ursina
In addition to the location, the orange spots are (as one might expect) typical of the Orange-spotted Lady Beetle. Live individuals are always spotted with orange or at least an orangish-yellow, though specimens in collections often fade over time and the color can't be determined.

B. decempustulata, in life, is spotted with off-white, light brownish-tan, or sometimes yellow but no hint of orange.

The two spp. can be mistaken in collections without closer examination of other physical features, but for live individuals, color is diagnostic.

Moved
Moved from Beetles.

Thank you for leading me in the right direction. I moved it to ursina, since this is the only one recorded for Ontartio and looks closer to my photo.
