Sphecidae- is this Eastern Cicada Killer, Sphecius speciosus - Sphecius speciosus
Skidaway Island, Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, USA
July 18, 2013
Size: Large wasp, 1.5 + inches
Large wasp flying low over slightly sloped grassy area edge of thin wooded "Dog Park", sandy soil of inner barrier island. Pet owners concerned as fairly large number of wasp flying low to ground. Many burrows noted over fairly large are of ground. Wasp species photographed as it exited a burrow.
2nd photo of a different wasp, same species as it crawled amongst and below the grass. I believe the species is "Eastern Cicada Killer" (Sphecius speciosus)

Any chance of fencing off the nesting area
during the short time they are actively nesting to avoid any incidents that might provoke calls for unnecessarily killing off the wasps?
