Your recognition of subspecies is very helpful. I have noted several colorful Viceroys in AR and OK this year and wanted to confirm that I wasn't missing the subspecies.

 
Yours are richly colored,
and they might be leaning a just a tad toward subspecies watsoni, but they don't really fit that subspecies. The line between subspecies is very fuzzy, with large grey areas where individuals often are intermediate, or may not even match any defined subspecies quite properly. The ones here in the Albuquerque area are variable, and lie somewhere on the fringe between subspecies archippus and obsoleta.
