Smerinthus jamaicensis Series (3rd - 5th instar and pupae) - Smerinthus jamaicensis

Smerinthus jamaicensis Series (3rd - 5th instar and pupae) - Smerinthus jamaicensis
Ontario, Canada
This is a Smerinthus jamaicensis development series. I'm working with silkmoths for my honours project and I've had the pleasure of raising these critters. Eggs were ordered from Bill Oehlke http://www3.islandtelecom.com/~oehlkew/
(Editor's note: Image dates are from June - July 2006. Raised in Ottawa, Ontario but this information removed from date field as these were captive-raised, not local specimens)

Hi Antoine
this is a nice series but it requires some editing. You have the same date on every image, and you don't indicate size on any of these. Accurate dates and size estimates would increase the value of these pictures to the guide. Dates you can probably get from your image files, and perhaps you can estimate sizes by measuring a typical host plant leaf/length of the petiole (the leaf stem shown in this image). One of the great things about raising caterpillars is that you can easily obtain this kind of data, not always readily available in the field.
Another issue is that since you obtained these by mail-order, they don't reflect actual wild presence of this species in Ontario, even though I believe it is actually native to your area. To avoid misleading information in our data map, datas and location should be entered in the text of your post, not in the data boxes provided on the submission form. This is an issue that also arises with captive-raised butterflies in butterfly exhibits.

Details
I'll fix up the series soon. It was a hassel just uploading and choosing my best pics. For the record they were raised on poplar and ranged in size from approx 4 cm to 5 cm (3rd - 5th instar) and the pupae are approximately 3 cm long. In terms of dates for the pictures I can only use estimates because moving, copying and renaming pictures messes up the "Date created" data of the file so that was my main problem. I raised these guys between mid June and the end of July from what I can recall. Hope this satisfies your craving for info lol ha ha ENJOY, theres more to come.

I will assist in editing what I can
- I'm taking the date out of all of these before moving them to the guide. Next time you post please keep those considerations in mind, though - it's much quicker to post correctly than to make changes later.

The reason I'm being a stickler about this is that we really don't have a shortage of images in the guide - what we have a shortage of is images with complete and accurate information - and those are the ones that are of most value to us. : )
