Maybe it looks odd for a Clemens' because it's a sister species A. arcanella? I noticed
this discussion
today.

Clemens'?!
I've had a few Clemens' around, but they've looked quite different from both my moth here and the one you linked.
Compare with these I've submitted to BAMONA:
#1
#2
Does this species just look quite different when worn or fresh, and when the mohawk is spiked or patted down?

variations
As far as the different looks of this species, if you click on the thumbnail photo I included in my previous comment and peruse the images link on this site for the species, you will see that this species has several variations - the page for this species on MPG also presents several variations. I'm not an expert by any means, but based my suggestion wholly on photographs submitted for the Clemen's to the two sites. I hope that helps. 8-)

Yes, thanks.
This evening a moth that looks halfway between the ragged one I submitted here and the two sleeker ones I linked to appeared by my exterior light. An amazing species.
