Question
Thank you all for the ID
My neighbor has a bunch of Carpenter bees. She says, when they are flying; if the are mad at you, they will drop their stinger. I think its cute, but can she be right? Just thinking. Kathleen

Drop? As in it falls off, or
Drop? As in it falls off, or they extend it? Neither seems right to me. I've never had a carpenter bee attack in flight, and doubt if it happens. I have had one position itself in its tunnel with rear end outmost when disturbed. The males will investigate you in flight.

extend out
My poor Neighbor, she must be seeing the males investigate her.
They fly around her, then hover in front of her, their abdomen lowers an she really believes this is when the stinger extend out.
She had a pouch constructed about 8 years ago to prevent falling.
She is 79. My husband says it is all pressure treated wood but the bees are really over running her over there.
I bring her mail to her everyday and there always defending her porch as territory.
She kills them with gloves on. I wish I could help her get rid of them. Thanks Kathleen
