well i did not want to stump everyone... at least i fell better calling it a Phidippus, although all of the P. whitmani i have seen around here have been on the red side, the brown is new to me. shall i leave it in the ID request for Herschel to happen upon it, or just go ahead and move it to genus.

More info...
What was it perched on, or where did you find it?

After going through the revision last night I'm leaning heavily towards whitmani also. If that's a toadstool underneath, and it was running around on leaf litter or other forest floor items, Don's initial ID of whitmani is a very safe bet.

Phid
yeah, i really should have mentioned that, it was on a toadstool in the woods, i just did not think that ruled out everything but P. whitmani, although that is the ideal whitmani place to be.

Phidippus, yes
This appears to be an old female in need of a good meal. If I had to guess, I'd say that this is most likely a P. whitmani. I haven't seen one with the combination of red and brown color scales before. The revision states that northern females are sometimes brown instead of red, but this isn't north and has both red and brown. I don't see the typical whitmani spots on the dorsum, but that may be due to the angle and the shadow. Maybe somebody else (Jeff, Jay, Herschel, etc.) will give their two cents.

Indeed
Much duller than my usual local whitmani, but I can't make it into anything else.

Phidippus
your usual and my usual are still only a matter of miles apart... i feel pretty good about calling it a P. whitmani, thank you Herschel.

...
That threw me off too. Princeps is the only one close to this that I've actually laid my eyes on, and this doesn't look quite like princeps either.

I'll look through the revision when I get home. Hopefully Jeff or Herschel will have already ID'd it by then. :-)
