Ichneumonid Cocoon
Thompson Falls, Sanders County, Montana, USA
August 12, 2006
Size: around 10 mm
Can I assume all these are Ichneumonid cocoons, or am I taking too much liberty?

Moved from
Cocoons
. I deleted that page because they were all Campoplegine cocoons, as Tony Thomas had determined long ago. I've moved the reference he gave on that page to the Campopleginae guide page. I have checked out that reference, and it includes many photos of cocoons identical to the ones on BugGuide.

So I guess the ruling is
to leave them at the Ichneumonoidea level? I gave it this ID based on comments under
, but it looks like braconids have similar looking cocoons as well.

Looks to us like Tony and Eric
are saying these should all be moved to Ichneumonidae, and Tony even gives a link to deeper in that taxonomy. We would suggest following Tony's ID and moving them all to Campopleginae.

Thanks!
I'll check that book out. The two genera I mentioned are in fact in that subfamily, so there doesn't seem to be any conflicting evidence. I tried moving the ichneumon cocoons section to within Campopleginae, but the system won't let me. I guess for now I'll just add a link to it from the Campopleginae guide.

My bad:-)
I ran a similar-looking image by some wasp authorities a few months ago (for verification in the field guide), and the consensus was Ichneumonidae. I can't tell the difference myself.
