Are those ant pupade?
I thought they were in cocoons.

Some ants (e.g.
Lasius
) pupate in cocoons; others (e.g.
Formica
) do not. These are in fact ant pupae, but they seem too big to belong to the same species as this adult.

Actually...
Most
Formica
pupate in cocoons too. I believe that
Formica pallidefulva
workers frequently don't. The
Tapinoma
pupae in the photo are new queens, which explains the size discrepancy.

That explains it.
I often see
Formica
spp. carrying naked ant pupae, but of course that doesn't mean they're
Formica
pupae.
