Are those ant pupade?
I thought they were in cocoons.

Some ants (e.g. Lasius) pupate in cocoons; others (e.g. Formica) do not. These are in fact ant pupae, but they seem too big to belong to the same species as this adult.

 
Actually...
Most Formica pupate in cocoons too. I believe that Formica pallidefulva workers frequently don't. The Tapinoma pupae in the photo are new queens, which explains the size discrepancy.

 
That explains it.
I often see Formica spp. carrying naked ant pupae, but of course that doesn't mean they're Formica pupae.
