Snaggletooth Queen Ant - Myrmecocystus - female

Snaggletooth Queen Ant - Myrmecocystus - Female
Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, USA
July 8, 2013
Size: Body 9 mm
Found her in the front porch one evening, I thought she might be an Argentine Ant with the one petiole...but she seems much more colorful than the photos on BG. Help in ID would be appreciated. That's one nasty looking tooth she has. Thanks

Honeypot Ant (Myrmecocystus sp.) - a foudress queen...
Or, which amounts to the same, a dealated reproductive female, ready to start a new colony.
However, members of this genus rarely do that alone: most often, they associate themselves at several females, sometimes up to a small dozen of them (the so-called polygynous foundation, as opposed to the monogynous foundation).
But when the first workers emerge, these former associate founding queens start to fight in a deadly contest, until only one of them survives.
This is the main reason for these impressive mandibles, really terrific weapons as you point out.
One of the large, red and black species of the genus. It would be funny if this were M. mordax, one of them. Maybe Dr Trager will know.

Honeypot Ant
I've never seen a Honeypot ant before. Thank you for your response.
