This defoliation event is distant from where I am. I am posting the image on behalf of someone else who photographed them. Also, these caterpillars have would have pupated by now.
This is likely
Operophtera bruceata
, which has caused similar defoliation events on Kodiak Island in the past.
Epirrita undulata
would be another good guess as this species has been involved in recent defoliation events in southcentral Alaska. I am no Lepidoptera expert, however, which is why I posted the image here.
