Wasp-like fly - Spilomyia longicornis

Wasp-like fly - Spilomyia longicornis
My back yard, East part of the state, Oklahoma, USA
October 21, 2004
All the time I was photographing it I thought it was a yellowjacket. It was not untill I saw it on the monitor that I realized it was a fly.
I could not find it in the guide or any of my books.
Size about 15mm.

Syrphidae
Thanks Patrick.
This site is amazing I had the ID in less than 1 hour.

you're welcome--moved to guide
You're welcome. Would not have been so fast except I took a "peek" at the site on my lunch break. Those things are so cool.

I moved this to the guide page for the species--seems id. is pretty certain.

Syrphidae: Spilomyia longicornis
Spilomyia longicornis. Listed in Syrphidae of Oklahoma, referenced on that guide page.

I had exactly the same experience as you did--took a photo thinking it was a Yellowjacket.
