county
Hi doc, the county would be Erath. And I think it was a first here. The sighting was about 5 mi.NE of Stephenville.

county?
Dave - In which county did you take this photo? I am subscribed to the TX-Butterfly listserv, through which I can relay your sighting, which might be a first record for its county.

Beautiful
Aside from the rarity of the skipper in the US (of which I was not aware), this picture is beautiful! Beautiful skipper and beautiful setting!

Two-barred Flasher
Dave -- your picture is priceless! There are a lot of good people at the University of Texas who are interested in tracking this beautiful skipper. Go to this link and submit your photo. The contact at one time was Chris Durden -- but he may have moved on by now.

Skipper
It's a skipper, a type of butterfly, not a moth.
Looks like the Two-barred Flasher,
Astraptes fulgerator
. See
this page
and page 328 of the Peterson Eastern Butterflies guide
(
1
)
. It states the range is resident from the lower Rio Grande Valley to Argentina, but strays to central Texas, so this could be your butterfly. The web site linked has a confirmed record near Dallas, too.
