I am a beginner with dragonflies - can anybody tell me what this is. I don't think it is a male Eastern Pondhawk - it seems more stout and also has some colorations on the wings that I don't see on the images of Eastern Pondhawk

Hello Thomas, dragons can be quite challenging. Get yourself a regional guide ( Maine or Northeast US ). That will help you immensely. A great guide for damselflies is by Ed Lam called "Damselflies of the Northeast". His format should be used by all Odonata guides. Start learning the most common dragons first. Take pictures on use your computer screen in identifying the species. Start a real picture library for yourself - for study, records and enjoyment. If I can help in the future my email address is hwb1919@gmail.com. May the dragons be with you, Henry.

Thanks Henry, that was very helpful. I also found a female in my pictures, now that I got on the track. However it is not very clear and not worth putting it up here.
I have some other dragonflies that I can't identify - sorry I'm just starting to learn them. And it is surprising how many species there are!
