Numbers
Five species in the New World:
Brontaea debilis (Williston, 1896) - extreme southern US (TX, FL), Central/South America
Brontaea delecta (Wulp, 1896) - most of USA and SE Canada, Hawaii, Central/South America
Brontaea humilis (Zetterstedt, 1860) - introduced, scattered locales across northern NA, probably widespread now
Brontaea normata (Bigot, 1885) - Central/South America
Brontaea quadristigma (Thomson, 1869) - southern USA, FL-CA-KS-VA, South America
Identification
Males and females can be quite different in coloration.
Habitat
Attracted to dung, especially cow and horse dung, as well as garbage. (1)
Remarks
A common type of filth fly. (1)
