Larva ID

Size: about 1/2"

Sawfly or caterpillar? Probably impossible since I didn't get a picture of it's prolegs. If it helps any, it was moving very fast, unlike any caterpillar I have seen. It was on a stick, moved to clover, and surrounded by many species of Asteraceae with deciduous trees overhead, including Cherry.

I'm so glad you posted this pic---I saw dozens of these running around my backyard and I'd never seen larvae go that fast, so it was hard to believe it was a beetle and not a Lepidoptera....but I should have known by the way their heads look that it was a soldier! I have tons of soldier beetles in my garden every summer!

As usual, I was way off base. :)

We do have Soldier Beetles around here.

Thanks Hannah, I surely wish we could sort all of the guide pages by immature (larva, nymph) and adult, it would save lots of time searching.

I'll move it to the guide, if not needed feel free to frass.
