red wasp, maybe ichneumon?

red wasp, maybe ichneumon?
Springfield, Virginia, USA
October 22, 2004
A red wasp, possibly an ichneumon of some type? It was fairly large, though smaller than a typical paper wasp, and it had distinctively colored antennae. Any help identifying is appreciated.

Moved from Ichneumon Wasps.

Ichneumoninae…
The large and colorful appearance, dorsoventrally depressed abdomen, and wing venation with a closed pentagonal areolet indicates a wasp in this subfamily.

See reference here.

I agree.
At first I thought this might be a sawfly, but you are correct, this is an ichneumon:-)
