Syrphid fly pupa.

Young Black Poplars about 3 feet high. The leaves were covered with aphids.

 
Thought so!
I would think Syphini then, reminds me of the American Hoverfly. We don't have a whole lot of pupae confirmed to adults on the guide though, and the coloration on this specimen is super cool. I'm excited to see what emerges!
