Red, blue, yellow bug - Graphocephala coccinea

Red, blue, yellow bug - Graphocephala coccinea
Annapolis, MD, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA
October 5, 2006
Size: 3/8 inch?
Photographing my Hibiscus flowers which I have been doing all Summer when they bloom. Saw a bug and about to blow it off the flower when I saw the incredible coloration aginst a hot orange and pink Hibiscus flower. I would expect to see this kind of color in the tropics not Maryland. Underbelly and legs are bright yellow.

Hey Sandra
Looks like what you have there is a Red-banded Leafhopper (Graphocephala coccinea), also known as the Candy-striped Leafhopper. Definitely a colorful and eye-catching insect.

Yes, he is colorful and reall
Yes, he is colorful and really made my day. Thanks for the info. He really made my photo of the HIbiscus flower special. One of those lucky shots. I will be looking for him to appear again yet this Fall.
