An orb weaver - but which one? - Neoscona crucifera

An orb weaver - but which one? - Neoscona crucifera
Pittsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina, USA
October 5, 2006
This spider had a large web in the doorway of my garden shed. The web was characteristic of the orb weavers, but I can't seem to figure out which one it is!

Looks like a Neoscona
but we haven't figured out how to tell them apart yet. Maybe Jeff will know which one.

I thought it might be
a red-femured spotted orb weaver, but the markings and the coloration are so different! I'm really new at spider ID, so it's a real learning process here!

Neoscona crucifera
I think I finally have this one ID'd. It looks like Neoscona Crucifera.
