Identification

Identification requires examination of the male genitalia.

Range

Zicrona americana: Western North America (AK-BC-CA-TX-KS).

Zicrona caerulea: Much of Canada and northern United States. For some time, this species was thought to be confined to eastern North America, but records from Oregon and Wyoming are described in (1).

Based on distributional data, records from eastern North America should be Z. caerulea and records from the southwestern US should be Z. americana. Records from the pacific northwestern US and adjacent Canada could be either species and are likely impossible to distinguish without examination of male genitalia. It is currently unclear if Z. caerulea is present in Alaska, but given the information present here, records from that state should probably also stay at the genus level. (1)
