Laphria sp.
This is a robber fly in the genus Laphria. I suspect it is Laphria grossa, judging by the size compared to the Japanese beetle, or perhaps the slightly smaller lookalike L. champlainii.

Getting late
This genus is primarily found as adults in spring into mid-summer, with stragglers into August. There is also one fall-only species in your area (L. affinis).

Pines
Laphria affinis is found in areas with lots of pine.
