wasp at gall - Polistes

wasp at gall - Polistes

Wasp eating honeydew from a cynipid acorn gall on Quercus emoryi.

Is it possible to ID the Polistes to species from this image? The only other angle I got just barely shows a bit of the abdomen but it's mostly a frontal shot too.

Based on only this image it is impossible to tell whether this is aurifer or dorsalis. Could you upload the other image as well?

Hi Matthias,
I thought that in aurifer the mesoscutum (Bohart & Bechtel, 1957) is all black. Snelling (1970): ground color of thorax largely black.
Ah, I see there's the 'red color variant' of aurifer mentioned on the BG INFO page.
I'm stumped for now.
Have a couple of sets of images I've never posted, believe to be P. dorsalis californicus, and posted for now under genus. What do you think?

but apachus here:

added 2 images
One showing a bit of the side of the abdomen, the other a bit of the top. I'm not sure if they'll help at all, and they can be deleted if they don't.

same wasp in different view
I think I got a photo of the same wasp:

More of the abdomen is visible.

Thanks for posting this! Hopefully it will help with the ID.

Not same specimen
Thanks! The other image clearly is aurifer, but it does not look like this is the same specimen.

There is not enough visible of the abdomen to make the call. But they are very nice images anyways.

Moved from Polistes.
Thanks Hartmut!

I'd say that
Polistes dorsalis californicus is a good match.
