Cordulegaster naiad – which species? - Cordulegaster

Cordulegaster naiad – which species? - Cordulegaster
Hastings, Ontario, Canada
August 9, 2013
Size: 25 mm
Found buried in a sand-bottomed stream in a wooded area. If I can get images with a better camera and lighting, what characteristics are required for an id?

New images added here ...
I posted the recent pics at my blog. Again, not all from the same individuals, but I didn't want to kill or injure a naiad just to obtain an image of the mouth parts and associated setae ~ http://joebartok.blogspot.ca/2013/08/cordulegaster-naiad.html

Thanks
Ben – thanks for posting that key, that was a great help!

I re-visited the stream and examined/photographed more naiads. A bit of doubt with regard to the setae, but the weight of the evidence points toward Cordulegaster maculata.

I'm not certain how to post the images here as they are from different specimens (and hence possibly different species) and thereby shouldn't be linked.

Key
A key to northeastern species of Cordulegaster can be found here:

http://insects.ummz.lsa.umich.edu/MICHODO/test/Corduleg.htm

Note that the key is for mature larvae, so it might not work for earlier instars. If you have the time, you could attempt to rear it to adulthood.
