Red Rock Skimmer - Paltothemis lineatipes - female

Red Rock Skimmer - Paltothemis lineatipes - Female
Chaney Trail above Pasadena, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California, USA
December 31, 1969
Rather unexpected in chaparral habitat with no water in the immediate vicinity, yet there were numerous other odes in the area, including Blue-eyed and Common Green darners, Flame Skimmer, and Pale-faced Club Skimmer, plus loads of Vivid Dancers, so I figure the water wasn't far away. This female was patiently patrolling a clearing in the chaparral like a male darner - not a behavior I see from females of this species in their streamside habitats, where they are constantly barraged by males. I was excited to see it land, as I don't get much opportunity to photograph them when they're under siege by males!
