Wow, Dorothy, a great find for Durham NC. I will have to be on the look-out for these.

Marsh environment
I probably saw it in a marsh a couple of blocks from my street in southwest Durham. Now cattails have taken over, but it was more like a swamp with trees four years ago. The number of insect species has gone down quite a bit over that time.

I might have seen this fly on a Water Primrose leaf. Those plants are all gone now.
