Please explain
why this image was placed today under Calleida punctata against better fit C. purpurea. Thanks.

Calleida purpurea?
Hello to a fellow Wisconsinite-entomologist! This is obviously not Calleida punctata which has a characteristic bright orange pronotum. That leaves C. purpurea which is the only other Calleida species that I'm aware of in Wisconsin. It is relatively rare here. Too bad that the image is blurry. I'm still looking for the first specimen of C. purpurea to add to my Wisconsin ground beetle reference collection. Are you able to donate one C. purpurea? Join the Wisconsin Entomological Society if you are not already a member!

Well, this little park where I "hunt" seems to have an abundance of some uncommon insects. All I have are these two photos, no specimens. The WES doesn't seem to have a very active web link.

Annual WES Membership is only $5.00 which includes three informative 10-page newsletters. Go to the WES website at http://www.entomology.wisc.edu/wes/contacts.html and e-mail Janice Stiefel about information on next WES meeting this Fall. Many members bring their insect slides to show and get identified at the meetings.

Thanks. I'll contact Janet.

Calleida
Thanks to both of you for the information. To me this insect looks most like Calleida punctata except that the pronotum on this particular insect is not quite as orange as the other examples shown.
