Williamson's Emerald - Somatochlora williamsoni - male

Williamson's Emerald - Somatochlora williamsoni - Male
Missinipe, Saskatchewan, Canada
July 17, 2013
I realized on the second-to-last day of the DSA's that I had not caught, photographed, or even seen any species of Somatochlora emerald in the first 6 days of the meeting. But the 7th and final day, I caught three! The day started very slowly, as Fred Sibley, Jerrell Daigle, and I explored a bog-margined lake near the 110 KM mark of Highway 102. But toward noon the action started to pick up, and as I followed the bog up(?)stream away from the lake, I ran into this critter and netted it. We originally misidentified it as a Brush-tipped Emerald, but Jerrell thought it was too big and eventually figured out its true ID. (An actual Brush-tipped was the third and final species that I caught that day)
