Monkey slug - Phobetron pithecium

Monkey slug - Phobetron pithecium
Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, USA
October 10, 2006
Size: 8 mm
Sorry not the best picture, but this is an earlier instar than the other images we have, so I thought it was worth adding. The colors are much brighter than others in the guide, too. I found this on the door of my car today - parked underneath a cherry tree, from which it probably fell. (Or did it jump? How many other people in Gainesville would have recognized this for anything other than a piece of debris, I wonder - do you ever get the feeling attention-seeking bugs are seeking us out?)

Very cool Hannah!
Does it have stinging spines like the Saddleback?

Apparently so -
I didn't test it. Unfortunately it escaped in my house yesterday, so I may yet find out!
