Need specimen
I need to see an actual specimen in order to make a positive identification. Did you happen to collect one or both of these? Since you wondered if this was a Chalcophora--no Calif. species of Chrysobothris remotely approaches in size even the smallest Chalc. angulicollis--I would guess your image repesents Chryso. monticola. However, superficially that species looks much like Chryso. leechi, with which it is broadly sympatric, although the latter averages smaller in size, ranging from 9.5-13mm, while C. monticola ranges from 11-17mm.

no specimens
I didn't collect any of these individuals, but I did note they looked relatively large and conspicuous. Thank you for the notes on Chalcophora/Chrysobothris sizes.
