Need specimen
I need to see an actual specimen in order to make a positive identification. Did you happen to collect one or both of these? Since you wondered if this was a
Chalcophora
--no Calif. species of
Chrysobothris
remotely approaches in size even the smallest
Chalc. angulicollis
--I would guess your image repesents
Chryso. monticola
. However, superficially that species looks much like
Chryso. leechi
, with which it is broadly sympatric, although the latter averages smaller in size, ranging from 9.5-13mm, while
C. monticola
ranges from 11-17mm.

no specimens
I didn't collect any of these individuals, but I did note they looked relatively large and conspicuous. Thank you for the notes on Chalcophora/Chrysobothris sizes.
